Italiano: Philip Henry Sheridan ( 6 marzo1831 – 5 agosto1888) fu un ufficiale di carriera dell'esercito statunitense e un generale dell'Unione nella Guerra di secessione americana. La sua carriera è degna di essere ricordata per la sua rapida promozione al grado di Maggior Generale e per la sua stretta connessione con quella del tenente generaleUlysses S. Grant, che trasferì Sheridan dal comando di una divisione operativa nel teatro bellico occidentale per affidargli il comando dei corpi di cavalleria dell'Armata del Potomac nell'Est. Nel 1864 sconfisse le forze confederate nella Campagna della Valle dello Shenandoah del 1864, Per aver distrutto le infrastrutture economiche della Valle, fu chiamato "The Burning" (L'incendiario) dai suoi abitanti, distinguendosi per essere stato il primo a far uso della tattica della "terra bruciata" nel corso della guerra. Nel 1865, la sua cavalleria incalzò il gen. Robert E. Lee e fu determinante per indurlo alla resa ad Appomattox Court House.
