À 26 ans, Josef Newgarden décroche sa première couronne en IndyCar en terminant devant son équipier français et tenant du titre, Simon Pagenaud. Scott Dixon se classe 3^e, 21 points derrière Newgarden.

Les 500 miles d'Indianapolis sont remportées pour la première fois par un Japonais, Takuma Satō. Le titre du meilleur rookie est attribué à Ed Jones, qui termine 14^e du championnat.
